Inovasi UB, Pembangkit Listrik Bertenaga Suhu

Pembangkit listrik tenaga air, nuklir, maupun hidro telah umum dikenal. Tidak mau kalah, tiga mahasiswa Fakultas Teknik (FT) Universitas Brawijaya (UB) Malang menciptakan inovasi pembangkit listrik dengan menggunakan suhu. 
Mereka adalah Rahmat Ananta, Dessy Lina Rachmawati, dan Rifka Fahriza Jauhari. Berawal dari cara kerja dispenser, tercetuslah sebuah ide membuat energi alternatif dengan menggunakan suhu. Jika dispenser menghasilkan air dingin dan panas karena energi listrik, maka Hybrid Micro Thermoelectric Generator milik tiga sekawan tersebut membalik konsep itu. Energi listrik bisa diciptakan dari suhu dingin dan panas.

6 Himpunan Mahasiswa Sabet Riset Award 2013

Kegiatan himpunan mahasiswa (hima) enggak melulu bakti sosial dan menggelar seminar. Buktinya, mahasiswa dari berbagai hima di Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB) dan Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB) ini menghasilkan berbagai inovasi unik yang aplikatif.

Ragam inovasi itu mereka ikut sertakan dalam kompetisi Tanoto Student Research Award (TSRA) 2013. Awalnya, para mahasiswa ITB dan IPB yang tergabung dalam hima menyampaikan proposal penelitian berdasarkan kebutuhan masyarakat.

Proposal yang lolos sebagai finalis kemudian didanai untuk menjalankan riset selama satu tahun dengan didampingi dosen. Kemudian, hasil riset tersebut dipresentasikan di hadapan dewan juri yang terdiri dari dosen ahli dan pihak Tanoto Foundation.

Novozymes New CEO Says Biofuels May Supply 90% of Revenue

Novozymes A/S (NZYMB), the world’s biggest maker of enzymes used in laundry soap, may get 90 percent of its revenue from biofuel makers by 2030 if more governments start promoting renewable energy, the company’s next CEO said.

The company currently gets about 16 percent of its revenue from biofuels and less than 1 percent from enzymes for cellulosic-ethanol plants, which turn waste and inedible crops into sugary liquids for fuel, according to Peder Holk Nielsen, who becomes chief executive officer on April 1.

“If the world really wants to secure a significant part of its liquid-fuel consumption based on biomass, this would totally transform the enzyme business,” Holk Nielsen said in an interview. “This would revolutionize the company.”

Fuel Cells: The nanomaterials could generate hydrogen in portable fuel cells to power portable electronics

Hydrogen fuel cells produce electricity without harmful emissions, but the devices face a significant hurdle to widespread use: Transporting the flammable fuel poses safety risks. So scientists have been working on systems for making the fuel where it’s needed, by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen gas. Now researchers report that silicon nanoparticles could help. The nanoparticles react with water to produce hydrogen much faster than larger forms of silicon can (Nano Lett., DOI: 10.1021/nl304680w).

Some prototype hydrogen-generating systems use metal materials such as magnesium hydride, aluminum, or zinc to react with water. The compounds don’t require light, catalysts, or heat to push the reactions along. But these materials often react slowly, which isn’t ideal for applications that need a quick burst of electrical power.
